module reflection journal !
finally, we have come to the end of this CIP module. other than the final exam coming up on the 27th february, i think we are quite done with the module. guess it`s time for reflection! =)in my point of view, the syllabus covered in this module was quite appropriate. as expected, we learnt what are computers, and the uses and types of computers. then we went into detail of hardware, softwares, internet, security and privacy. these are all sorts of things related to computing and information processing. however, i think maybe more topics could be included. for example, more in-depths of macromedia programs?
the workshops on microsoft word and powerpoint was quite useful too. before i took up this module, i was thinking why and what do we even need to learn about word and powerpoint? it`s like so simple that even a primary school kid can use it. i thought i was really familiar with it already. but when going through the workshops, i found out that actually, there were much more knowledge i`ve yet to know. for example, the uses of the outline view and stuff like that. now i guess typing out a proposal in different heading and numbering is much easier with these skills! =)
for macromedia dreamweaver, i`ve actually been using it since sec 3 already. it`s a tool for me to create websites and layouts for my blog and it was something interesting to learn about with the html and css stuff. thus, to me, what`s covered in the lecture were just even more basic skills than what i`ve learnt myself. however for macromedia flash, it was fun and interesting doing the animations. though the skills covered in lectures and tutorials were really basic, there was alot more to learn from there. and with interest about such things, it was great fun while doing the hands-on assignment.
the PBL problems 1 and 2 were really a killer, to be honest. i actually quite disliked PBL problems as we were just given case studies and situations and required to solve all of them by ourselves! however, it does provide an opportunity for us to work in teams and develop problem solving skills. for instance, for PBL 1, we had to find out ourselves what hardware and software needed. and even had to go about checking the prices at shops and on the net.
other than that, we still had to compile every information found, organise them neatly into a proposal as well as on a powerpoint to present it nicely in front of the class. it was great challenge while we look at other groups present and discover how we differ from them. at the same time, worrying whether we are on the right track. and it also made us crack our minds doing things we`ve never done before. planning budget and acting really like a IT department. and then in PBL 2, we had to surf the net and get online help on troubleshooting problems gave to us. even if we arent sure of whether we`re right or wrong, the presentation had to go on. but yes, i`m sure those were really useful skills for this module.
my lecturers and tutor really tried very hard to deliver all the skills and knowledge needed for the module to us. especially my tutor, mr tan bee koon. he was really kind and encouraging. and when there were students who didnt manage to complete some assignments on time, he gave chance and asked for a submission at another later date. and being able to joke and laugh around with us made the class much more interesting.. a class size of around 40 was alright for learning but for me, i would still prefer learning in my own tutorial group of around 20. at least presentations werent as stress with competition to another tutorial class.
if there`s one thing i can change in CIP, i would want to take away more theory parts and increase hands-on projects, e.g. the macromedia project. i think such skills on creating websites are fun and much more interesting than memorising all the theory stuffs for examination. i though CIP would be something like BCA, with many hands-on assignments and tests.
i would appreciate having the chance to learn more about the usefulness of microsoft word on doing proposal as it is one essential skills for many modules and even for worklife in future. with that, i shall end by saying i really enjoyed CIP this semester and will try to do well for the final exams too. =)

spent a few hours in the library just now and finally, it`s completed!
need to get it burnt into a CD tonight. though we are told that the deadline for the assignment is 13th january, which is tomorrow, i think we will only see the teacher and pass up on monday.

monday lessons again.
CIP tutorial today was short. We were all doing the information research stuff for all the IT support needs. Have not started on our PowerPoint yet but shall do it soon? The teacher was really kind to give us pointers here and there. I'm sure he will help us alot in this project and oh yes, my group is going down to Sim Lim Square tomorrow to check out more information! Well, it's lucky that we've only got one PBL this semester. Don't have to crack our mind so much. =)
